Ban Greyhound Racing

We began our campaign to end greyhound racing in Aotearoa New Zealand in 2016 when we held a peaceful protest outside Greyhound Racing New Zealand’s AGM held in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

Since then we have held annual peaceful and well-attended protests during the Silvercollar Greyhound Race held at Auckland Council’s Manukau Sports Bowl. The Silvercollar is significant because it is twice as long as a typical greyhound race, drastically increasing the risk of injuries and death for the dogs. Greyhound Racing New Zealand themselves describe the Silvercollar as a ‘grueling’ and ‘stamina-sapping affair,’ raced over an ‘extreme’ 779 meters. For the dogs, it is the equivalent of a human running back-to-back marathons on consecutive weekends.

As well as peacefully protesting, we are also lobbying Auckland Council and the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board to no longer allow greyhound racing at the council-owned Manukau Sports Bowl.
